Gears of War Preview

Being and Xbox Live Gold Member and in the Raleigh/Durham NC area where Epic is located, I got to go to a Gears of War party. They converted a bar/club into the ultimate mecca of Gears. Lot's of character art and ambiance, bullet shells everywhere, but most importantly lots of stations to play Gears of War multiplayer. At least 10 developers of the game were there, including fan favorite Cliffy B,  and they were all very happy to answer questions, sign anything, talk about the game, and give me some good tips on the levels. I have to say they were all very nice. They love their game, and are very happy to have it finished and playable.

I also saw Cliffy B play for a second, and he looked unstoppable. Be afraid.

Multiplayer Impressions

I got to the event early, stayed late and went to the controller often, so I got a lot of rounds in.  I got to try 6 different levels; Gridlocked, Canals, Mansion and three I don't know the name of.  One of which was a very large warehouse level. All the levels feel pretty unique in design and layout meaning different tactics are required. They are laid out with many different paths, so you really have to use team cover as there are no real hiding spots to camp out anywhere for very long.

I tried a good variety of weapons, and handed out some serious beatdowns with each. You always  start with some great standbys; shotgun, back-up pistol, smoke grenades, and the assault rifle with the chainsaw.  No matter how many times someone was chainsawed, there were always lots of cheers as the blood splattered on the camera.  Some other weapons I got to try were the rocket launcher, sniper rifle (mostly on the receiving end watching my head explode), some satellite type weapon to call in a calculated explosion on a small area, a crossbow you can power up the longer you charge, and my favorite, a grenade launcher.  You only get two shots with the grenade launcher, but it is a killing machine.

Everything seemed to be more balanced the better I got at the game. There only seemed to be two or so weapon pick ups on the map so there is definitely some strategy there. But, even with only the starting weapons, you never feel out-gunned.

We played Warzone, which is a 4 on 4 last team standing mode which I really enjoyed.  If you got taken down, a teammate had some time to revive you before bleeding out. A nice little indicator pops up on your screen to find downed teammates, but even with that, I don't recommend getting too far away from your team. However, if you get chainsawed, or your head blown off, you don't have the option to be revived. You can get curb stomped by an enemy as well which finishes you off... it is brutal and awesome.

One thing I really liked was the active reloads. It is such a simple concept but adds a lot to the game.  Hit the Right Bumper once to start reloading, and then a little bar pops up. If you time it right, you reload faster. Also time it exactly right and hit the smallest area of the bar and you get a damage bonus on that clip. If you miss the sweet spot, you reload slower. I was getting the timing down by the end of the night, and barely needed to look at the bar. It's a cool innovation in my book.

The secret to multiplayer is teamplay. If you stick with your team and cover each other, you can do really well. Close teamplay prevents the other team from getting at you with the chainsaw, enhances your ability to revive each other and enables you to concentrate fire from multiple angles. When you play as a team, Gears of War just makes sense and you can't help but fall in love with it.

So overall I loved the multiplayer. If you have any questions let me know and I will answer them in our Forum.

Supernova attendee rountable

I had my chance to give a little 5-minute talk about 360voice.com and the power of community developer programs at the Supernova 2006 attendee round-table (Group A). As I was glancing around the room it seemed like people were getting it. Attendance was a bit light when I started... some more people filtered in by the end.

It was an extremely diverse group of people and topics so the format wasn't really conducive to deep exploration of the ideas surrounding the site, but it was nice to be able to contribute.

I gave a simple history of where the idea came from, what the results were of the development process and how Microsoft is enabling mash-ups of their Xbox Live data by making this information available in a community developer program. There were some good questions about how the Xbox blogs affect people's behavior and what the possible marketing effects will be as more and more information feeds are made available and utilized.

A few speakers later, the fire alarm went off causing us all to exit the building. It sort of broke the flow of the discussions, but everyone got back together to finish up the rest of the speakers. All in all, it was a fun experience.

Supernova 2006

I am going to be at the Supernova 2006 conference in San Francisco, CA this week. If anyone reading this is going to be there, send me an email at trapper@tjmweb.com and maybe we can meet up for drinks at one of the receptions.

I will also be giving a short 5-10 minute talk about 360voice.com at one of the attendee roundtables. on Wednesday! The talk will focus on developer communities empowered by data feeds and how they are the natural evolution of entertainment community building. So that should be fun!

Steve is going to try and keep things running while I am away!

Gamernight Wrap Up

We had our Beta community gamernight last night and played some PDZ.   I have to say it's a bit tough to manage games in PDZ, since anyone can join a private game as long as they are on someones friends list, we had a lot of random folks jump in that weren't as friendly as the rest of the crowd.  But overall I think the games went good.

Most of all I think we showed everyone that Trapper and Myself don't play much PDZ.  I met a few cool people, Gris marenGo showed us some mad skills, no wonder it's his most played game he was unstoppable.  Jespomo represented the UK and took a break from Football Manager to help team 360voice!  Thrills Killa's spent some time away from running his blog to kill me several times.  Tangeater111 was unfortunate enough to be on my team when I realized friendly fire was on and I put a mine on his back.  Megaman Solid stuck it out with us for the long haul. AndroidKing and GleebTorin also did a good job of filling me with lead.

We will do more of these in the future and add some tools on the page to see who is playing, and add badges and what not.  Just got to iron everything out.  If you joined us and I missed you above let me know.

E3: Too Much

I am at E3 just to busy to update. I will have some time to post my impressions tonight, but lets just say Microsoft is rocking it out in every way possible.  I think Cliffy B in his blog said it best about Microsoft this year...

"My entire 14 years making games I had always felt like I had been working with a publisher that either didn't get it or didn't support the product that the team and I agonize over making.

Finally, that is not the case. We have a partner that truly gets what we're trying to do and supports it tenfold. A partner that understands that you're not just launching a toy, you're launching a f***ing universe, a potential phenomenon.
"

E3 at the Blogger Bus

Microsoft set up a blogger bus, a swank tour bus with lots of TVs, Xbox 360's, leather couches and internet connections.

I was the first one on the bus so figured I would do an update.  While I am doing this Major Nelson is filming something for Xbox.com.  Actually he took my spot on the couch, so I am off to the side and probably won't be in the video.

So I'll give my rundown of the press conferences :

Sony
What happened Sony?  That was tedious.  They are lucky they had Insomniac games there, or the thing would have almost been a complete waste.  Showing GT:HD demo for that long was a real downer on the whole thing.  I thought the eye toy card battle look kinda neat, but a bit impractical as I doubt I am going to buy all that as none of my friends are going to do the same.

Nintendo
Didn't see it as I was in line to see the Xbox conference live.  I heard it was really good though, and can't wait to play Wii on the show floor.

Xbox 360
They really covered their basis this year, starting with the stunning Gears of War live demo, and you have to love Cliffy B.  Trapper and I talked a long time ago about the integration of PC and Mobile Phones and Xbox 360.  The ability to interact with your console and games from anywhere is something I really wanted and glad we will see it eventually. On that note I went to a session on it a bit later and they had some cool things we might see. Such as the game storing a video of you earning the achievement in the game and then sending it out to your friends cell phones as a video file.  Very cool stuff.

The Live Arcade is really getting flushed out as well, can't wait for Lumines, I almost bought a PSP just for that alone.

Oh update on the video... They need another take as someone was rambling apparently.

I got to play Splinter Cell Double Agent on the Xbox 360 for a bit as well.  It looks amazing.  Lots of options, and the level was actually bright and sunny I wasn't left to crawling in the shadows.  There was also a snow level where you could swim under the ice, that started with an amazing parachuting sequence you could control.

Okay I just got to look in the camera and say "My gamertag is Fatty Chubs".

Alright I will update a bit more later, after I get some time on the show floor.
