New Public API Available

Well I just realized (as in ChangeAgent just reminded me) that I didn't post on the devblog on code night about a new API that I added to our long list of public APIs

Originally requested by lqDFx there is now an API which you can get all the current details of a challenge, such as the challenge title, the dates the challenge runs, the prize up for grabs, and all the current challengers with their starting, current, and total gamerscore gains on this challenge.

Don't forget if you develop something with our public API make sure to post it in the Community Showcase, not to mention you join our XML Ninja brotherhood (currently 50 members strong!)

Genre Update

Only one genre update this week, and that's adding FIFA 08 to sports.  Why not more?  I have lots of good feedback from folks to add new genres, move some games around, add additional games, and more, but...  Well I am getting closer to knocking out a major genre change, and it doesn't make sense to move everything around and have people work towards new badges, just to rip out the current system.

Also we might have some other cool things in the next few days, as the three of us our rocking out some awesome code tonight!  So stay tuned for some non-genre updates hopefully this week.

Rabid72's Spotlight on 360voice

I was going through my feeds and came across Rabid72's blog where he did a spotlight on 360voice:

While the website drew initial attention from its unique and humorous “Give your Xbox its own blog” features, 360Voice.com has grown into one of the most comprehensive statistic-tracking websites in existence.

Blogs Delayed

Hey all... the blogs and everything will be delayed today. We had an error with our jobs. No data was lost, but  it is going to take quite a bit of time to bring our backups over and put everything back in place.

We will update as things start to get back on track.

Update 11:02am

Just wanted to let everyone know data is still processing... normally this all happens at 3am when no one is awake... so it feels like it goes faster, but when you are sitting there watching it, it actually takes a long time. :) We should be able to kick everything off shortly.

Update 12:30pm

Challenges are finished processing and blogs are starting to appear for folks.

Update 4:40pm

Blogs are done... leaderboards are behind and badges might not make it today... recaps are running right now too.

More More More Winners!

Three down, one to go. That's right, the third week of Challenge Month flew by, and we have more lucky winners to announce!

Lets run down the daily point winners,

2/15: Casarella
2/16: k0mm1ssar
2/17: JohnnyDrama814
2/18: prot0typeNXT
2/19: dieselv2
2/20: Denity
2/21: dancinns

Each of those folks will be netting a cool 1000 Microsoft points for just being in challenges!  Next up is our personal pick, this week we were looking for good sportsmanship.   I decided to actually pick two winners this week:

shredder46 - In Challenge Auto Challenge - #254
FieldersChoice - In Challenge Auto Challenge - #255

They were both in an auto challenge together, and it was a pretty close neck and neck battle.  shredder46 won graciously, but he also made it a point to stop by the Fielders next auto challenge and wish him luck.  Both members showed great sportsmanship.  This is how we always envisioned challenges to be, a great way to possibly make friends, or cheer each other on in the gamerscore race that we do everyday, congrats to both.

Finally the big winner of the week... we randomly picked one name out of everyone that participated in a challenge this week to take home a customized Zune 80!  And that person is...

TonySama!
(YAAAAAY!  CONGRATS!!!)

If you didn't win this week, we are still doing daily point drawings, and there is 1 more Zune 80 to give away.  So either start, join or sign up for Auto challenges to be eligible!  If you did win, we will be sending all prizes at the end of the month!

Thanks for participating everyone!

Gaming Bits
"Remember the Xbox Live Rewards program Old Spice Experience Challenge that was going on last year? So there you have it... almost two years in and still getting the linkage! Thanks everyone!

Everyone Likes Signatures, Right?

Well as mentioned on the forums, one of the things people were going to miss from theliveeye was the images for all your games completed.  Which then got me thinking that this your completed games are available here in your games list.  From that we bring you a completed games signature, which you can see on your share page, complete with code needed to display your completed list proudly.

I don't mean to flex my gaming muscles, but if you check the 360voice team, my completed list, is larger than Fatty Chubs AND ChangeAgent.

As always click the title if you wish to leave a comment - and enjoy!

Fighting the fight against spam

Lately comment spam has been out of control on the blog pages. Most of you won't see it because I wage an epic war in silence, wielding the power of the MYSQL database query analyzer to battle back the hordes of men's sexual health product ads, random strings of text, and poetry that makes no sense.

I asked the question on the forum if comments should be login only... the equivalent of throwing up a force field against the spam army... the overwhelming thoughts on the matter were "yes". Never mind that the only people that could respond were ones that were logged in... :)

So if you were someone who left comments without being a full member, you are going to have to upgrade for the fun to continue... but that has to be a small price to pay for a clean house right?

No Genre Updates tonight

We are working on getting back to regular genre updates, but with that said we won't be making any tonight.  With people still adjusting after last weeks major changes, we want to give another week for the feedback to settle in and people to work towards new badges before we throw any other games in, or possibly remove them

So get your feedback in on the last round, and we will try to incorporate it in next week.

Member of the Moment: Cormyre

(posted on behalf of Syndelin and Mr. Achievement)

We decided to put the Area 51 aliens hostages back to work this week, and they came up with our third Member of the Moment!

Cormyre has been part of 360voice since May 1st, 2006.  He likes to spend his time on the forums offering punch and pie, answering support threads any time he can help out, and generally being helpful and friendly to his fellow gamers. Apparently it was enough to get the aliens attention and make a good impression. He refused the crown, stating that he didn't want to end up looking like that picture of Steve we have floating around from PAX, but he did agree to answer our questions at least.

How long have you been gaming?
For about 25 years (god I feel old =P), my uncle bought me an Atari 2600 when I was 3ish and I was flipping games like Asteroids and Centipede by the time I was 4. (which the release of Centipede on the arcade made me think my skills have dropped, I suck at that game now)

What was the first game that you played and what drew you into gaming in general?
The first game that I played where I felt like I needed to get it was the original Legend of Zelda (yes the good ol' gold cartridge).  My parents rented an NES (for reasons I seem to forget) and I ended up playing hookie a few days from school to play that game. I ended up buying it a year or so after its release and playing it at my cousins (I did alot of my gaming at friends and relatives, at home I jumped from the Atari 2600 to the SNES so I missed a bit...)

What brought you to 360voice, and what do you think is the best feature of the site?
A link on live.xbox.com when 3v was a featured community site. Remember thinking "My 360 can blog?!  WTH!?" and then I was intrigued to figure out how it all worked.  Best feature is the community of course, I think for the most part we're a close-knit family. ^_^

Is there anything that you would like to see on 3v that isn't already here?
A button that says "Vote Cormyre for 3VCE!". Other than that I think its progressing great, and with Squid a part of the team now, it'll be interesting to see the added or combined features.

When did you sign up for live?
When I bought my original xbox...  I was kind of late to the game, as I was happy with my PS2; so I guess not until fall 2004. After hearing the hype I had to play through Halo and get Halo 2 when it came out, plus I knew I needed to play through Ninja Gaiden (and then Black and then Sigma...).  But I didn't really get into Live until I got my hands on Halo 2 and finished the main campaign, and still wanted to play it.  Even then, until the 360 came out most of my gaming was done on the PS2.

You seem to like the GH line/music type of games. What do you enjoy most about them?
I'm almost always listening to music, so to actually be able to interact with it was a great change. I have been playing the Harmonix games since before Guitar Hero, (Amplitude and Frequency on the PS2) so it was just a natural progression.  The fact that these games take actual skill is a plus (though I'm not skilled enough to stand up to some of our community members =P)

You have a pretty good streak going. How far are you willing to go to keep that?
How far? Unfortunately not as much as one may think, I always make sure to play something, and I'm in a household with 2 360's at the moment (soon to be 3 since The Third End is hooked on DMC4).  Plus being that I'm part of the IT dept at my work, even if my internet cuts out I can always run in there and play something online for a few, haha.

When do you most often game?
In the evenings/late night after work mon, wed-fri and the other days are just random if any.  I lose entirely too much sleep to video games.

What other systems, if any, do you own?
I've tried to own every system since I've been out on my own, but it hasn't always entirely worked out with systems dying, given them away and whatnot.  Currently owned systems are: PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox, 360, Wii, DS, GBA.  The one that gets the most play by far, is my 360. =P

What's your favorite feature on Xbox LIVE?
The fact the Microsoft opened the data to community developers. That idea just blew my mind at first.  Other than that, the ease of linking to friends (when NAT problems aren't involved... grrr), and just the whole integration of everything.

You have 156 played games in your 3v list. What games that you have played in this last year really stand out for you, and why?
X_x  Oy, so many great games came out this past year.  Bioshock, and Call of Duty 4 I think are the ones that stuck out the most, though I certainly put more time into CoD4 than anything else. I've been weening myself away from the MP of that game though... I'm sure I'll relapse when the DLC comes out in a few months.

Any must-have titles for 2008?
Almost every title is a must have for me, =P (as a drawer full of games shows) but the ones that come to mind mainly is Ninja Gaiden 2 and *cough* sorry 360 fanboys, but Metal Gear Solid 4 *cough*.

I see you have the HTTK badge.  What do you feel is the best part of the challenges?
Its an interesting push to see what people are willing to do to win challenges, going back and playing kids games and whatnot. Just an overall change in playing style.  I know I've went after a few titles I've played that I wouldn't have, Kong and Avatar to name a fe.... OK, actually that's pretty much it.

When you aren't in a challenge, do you play for points... or fun?
C: all the above. I think I have modified my style of play a little bit trying to build up my completion percentage.  The Orange Box is one example. It's been sitting here for a while, but I'm not sure I want to play it on my main gamertag being that I know I won't get the TF2 achievements.

What is the Achievement are most proud of?
It use to be finishing CoD2 on Veteran, now its easily the most frustrating achievement I have... Mile High Club from CoD4 X_x I played that level sooooo many times, just barely failing.

Is there a feature you would like to see in the next Xbox 360 System Update?
There's so many ways they can clean up the dashboard and speed it up. Caching gamerpics, arcade games and whatnot, making it so the users don't have to wait so long for lists to show up. I have TONS of gamerpics and dread it every time I go to change it because of this.

Is there anything that you would like to add, or that you would like the community to know about you?
...I'm the one that's been spiking the punch with non-alcoholic beer... sorry. And thanks to Trapper and Steve for all the hard work and our 3VCE' as well ^_^

Thank you so much for your time and your contributions here at 360voice. Community members like you are what make this place one of the most amazing things to be a part of.

The second week of February winners!

The second week of Challenge Month is officially spent, and we have more lucky winners to announce!

And first we have the daily point drawing winners:

2/8: Cataleet
2/9: CaptainNintendo
2/10: CodeSe7en
2/11: One Crazy Idiot
2/12: TxTehAdz
2/13: guitarfreak1982
2/14: Bojangles91W2P

Each of those folks will be netting a cool 1000 Microsoft points for just being in challenges!  Next up is our personal pick, this week we went purely on numbers and picked the person who had the most points in one challenge and did not win.  Out of the challenges ending that week it was:

dzstarr6668 - In Challenge Couch Battle

He managed to net over 16,000 points, but just couldn't move into 1st. For this he at least takes home a 360voice.com T-shirt.

Finally the big winner of the week... we randomly picked one name out of everyone that participated in a challenge this week to take home a customized Zune 80!  And that person is...

Samphis!
(I hope you like friggin rad gadgets!)

If you didn't win this week, we are still doing daily point drawings, and there are 2 more Zune 80 to give away.  So either start, join or sign up for Autochallenges to be eligible!

Thanks for participating everyone, it continues to be rockin!

Out of town

Hey all... just wanted to let you know that Fatty Chubs and I (Changeagent) are out of town for the entire weekend. Squidpunch is doing a great job holding things down... but if you see our Xbox's being sad and my forum responses lagging, that is the reason. I should be back in town and catching up on Sunday night or Monday morning.

Just wanted to let you all know in case you were waiting for something.

Update 7:37am CT

We will be posting all of the second week winners this evening. Due to travel we didn't have an opportunity to get it up last night... everyone crashed out early. :)

More Code Night Goodness

In addition to all the Genre Changes that  Fatty Chubs mentioned earlier, you might notice we recently put your challenge stats on the blog page (look down under the watchlist).  This is was one of the changes I hinted about in my first official dev blog post.  So if you are like me (0 for 7) it's nice and easy for everyone to see.  I better get cracking and actually get a win under my belt.  So head on over to your or your friends blog and see how they are doing in the world of challenges.

Finally just in cause you don't have time to leave comments on the blogs over the web - you are in luck you are now able to view and post comments on the mobile version of your blogs!

Genre Updates

We are still plugging away at tweaking the badge systems, but we heard the cries and did some genre updates.  The following are all additions to the genres.

  • Puzzle - Boogie Bunnies
  • Sports - NBA 2k8, NBA Live 08, NCAA March Madness 08
  • Retro - Tron, Tempest, Asteroids Deluxe
  • SHMUP - Mutant Storm Empire, Omega Five
  • Family - SpongeBob UnderPants!, Cars: Mater-National, The Golden Compass, Looney Tunes: AA
  • RPG - Arkadian Warriors
  • Music - DDR Universe 2
  • FPS - Fear Files, Timeshift

Did we miss something? Make a mistake? Or do you just want to congratulate us for an awesome job, sound off here!

Hey Look it's the new guy

Well just in case you missed when it was officially announced, or listened to the latest podcast the team of 360voice is now 3 people strong!  Thanks to Trapper and Steve for giving me a shot, and thanks to all of you who have sent congrats to me in pretty much every form except a letter via the us postal service.

I have been spending time understanding the current code, database layout, and the support tools that we have here at 360voice (many of you might have gotten a response to your support request from me over the last couple days), as well as working on some small enhancements here and there.

If you haven't noticed when posting on the forums over in your gamercard area you now have a running count of how many comments you have made on your (and others) blogs.  Its pretty impressive the number of comments some of you crazy folks have made thus far.  Yes I am talking to you Fshguy with your almost 6k comments left.

More recently you might have noticed a small change in your challenge page.  Specifically in the table that lists all the challenge participants your gamertag will be colored so you can easily find it, and as you hover over the other members you can see how far above or below you are from that person without pulling out your TI-82 calculator.

I have a few other things in the works that will probably be available soon keep an eye on your blog, and the mobile version of your blog and you just might notice them before they get posted officially.

Just a real quick reminder, we also set up a tool to make it easier for us to share the support tickets you guys are sending in, to make sure your request is handled as fast as possible when sending a direct email make sure to send it to support@360voice.com.  The mail@360voice.com address is still a valid address to contact us, but we are trying to funnel all support requests to the support address.

Once again thanks for all the congrats and the huge welcome I got from everyone when I joined the team.

jedi8955 - In Challenge Gamerscore Ballas

We blogged about it before this week, but he gained over 11,000 points in a 30 day challenge, and ending up losing by 2 points!  For his efforts and good sportsmanship he nets a 360voice.com T-shirt.

Finally the big winner of the week... we randomly picked one name out of everyone that participated in a challenge this week to take home a customized Zune 80!  And that person is...

Tha MasterCheif!
(OOOOOOOOOO! AHHHHHHHHHH!)

If you didn't win this week, we are still doing daily point drawings, and there are 3 more Zune 80 to give away.  So either start, join or sign up for Autochallenges to be eligible!

Thanks for participating everyone, it's been a lot of fun.

Interviewed by Frag Doll Jam

Steve and I had a really fun interview with Jam from Frag Dolls UK. She asked great questions and she put out a very well edited podcast... I think during recording it... Skype crashed... and my daughter shattered a wine glass in the kitchen. Good times. Anyhow, check it:

Or is it?  Frag Doll Jam grabs the scoop from Trapper Markelz and Stephen Sopp, creators of massive community site 360voice.com.  How did they come up with the idea?  How much of a role did Microsoft play in its creation?  And what they think about those notorious Avatar: The Burning Earth achievements…

Go listen!

There is also a funny picture of Steve and I that she posted... bonus! Thanks Jam!

Challenge abuse/error update

When we dove in and looked at all of the active challenges, we found a few things:

  1. There were a few people playing multiple accounts within challenges. For every instance we found this blatant, the challenge was removed, all the tags where removed and the IP address associated with these activities has been banned.
  2. There were some people who were in a pending challenge, and also elected to join an auto-challenge. After their auto-challenge started, their manual challenge was launched by the creator. Because you are not allowed to be in two challenges at the same time, we had no choice but to remove people from the NEWEST challenge they were in.
  3. In some instances there are now challenges with less than the minimum # of people required by the tier. We thought about canceling these out, but didn't feel that would be fair as it was our mistake that caused us to remove people and drop it under the required tier... so we are going to let those people ride it out.

So if you see any funniness in challenges, feel free to email us at mail@360voice.com and let us know. As the volume of challenges increase we are trying to stay on top of any cheating/account hijacking. Sorry for any confusion these clean up efforts cause. If you feel like you have been unfairly treated, you can always contact us and we will work with you to figure something out.

Closest challenge?

There was a fun forum post by Ten Stitches about the closest win in an Old Spice Experience Challenge. He found won that came down to a 2 POINT difference between 1st and 2nd place. Check it out:

Gamerscore Ballas
It was a heated competition for the entire 30 days, each gamer bouncing back and forth, trading the lead. In the end, IV Headsh0t VI was able hold on by only two points over jedi8955.

You know what the best part of this is, and why I feature it on the homepage? At the end of the challenge, the gamer that was beaten by only two points didn't freak out... didn't accuse the person of cheating... didn't do anything but post the message:

Dude, TWO POINTS.

Congratulations man.

That is some serious class right there. Congrats to you both for such an exciting challenge and for being good people.

Challenge Abuse

Folks just a reminder, any attempt to abuse the challenge system will result in a forfeit of the challenge, and loss of any prize.  This includes registering multiple accounts or dummy accounts, or hijacking accounts.

Note that there are multiple checks built into this, so that even if the challenge is complete we still investigate, and will stop actual prize fulfillment in those cases.  We are starting to see a few users who have tried to game the system.  We are working on removing them, and any prizes will not be sent out to the offending individuals.

If you have any questions you can e-mail us at mail@360voice.com

Are you ready for some non-Madden football?

I am talking real football... as in, "Are you watching the Superbowl?"

If you are and want to hang out, jump in our chat room. Steve and I will be chilling out.

Update 9:35pm CT

Thanks everyone who hung out. That was a lot of fun. The conversation sort of went everywhere, which was hilarious. We talked sports, football rules, COD4, commercials, cars, cable companies, capture cards, Zune, Halo, junk food, movies, etc. Good times! It always makes me wish we did more scheduled chat events.

New 3VCE Illum1na!

Not only are we proud to welcome Squidpunch to the team, we can't forget about those hardworking and knowledgeable Community Experts! We want to welcome our newest addition, Illum1na.

Most of you should know him from the forums, where he has really been stepping it up, always quick with a informative and friendly answer. But you also might know him for his great tool 360surface.net. We want to thank him for accepting the reward and for making the community a better place!

The same goes for all of you out there. We have been doing a lot of growing lately and the new members keep rolling in. Thank you to everyone for continuing to be one of the best and friendlies communities out there.  Keep the welcome threads coming, and thanks for playing nice!

Everyone welcome Squidpunch to the team, officially!

Never a serious moment
Squidpunch laughing at Fatty Chubs
during code weekend.

The contracts have been signed... the souls have been sold... Steve and I would like to announce that David Larrabee (aka Squidpunch) has officially joined the 360voice team. Where we were two, now we are three...

It is always said that good things come in threes right?

Why Squid? Coincidentally, he was the very first person awarded the API Samurai badge. While 360voice  has grown, and Squid's own endeavors have accelerated, he has continued to be a strong member of our community, creating compelling content with the APIs and assisting whenever he could. We flew him out for a code weekend, and after that Steve and I knew that, if we were going to get some help, he was the perfect guy to provide it. It wasn't enough to just make him a 3VCE... we needed someone like him committed to helping us out... so we asked him to join up.

He will still continue with his personal projects... and there are many:

TheLiveEye

360friendspot

madden-stats

Rabbit Tracker: (360voice API)

Challenge Scout (360voice API)

Wordpress Plugin (360voice API)

360 voice Leaderboards (360voice API) - no longer online

Unscripted 360
Helps out as a mod, and some coding from time to time, most notably the "blog medals" http://www.unscripted360.com/medals-page/

360voice API to Standard RSS (360voice api)

As you can see from that list, Squid is a very important person in the community. We are proud to have someone of his caliber on the team.

Funny story about the leaderboards... Squid built those before we actually had leaderboards on the site (and when we were using the wetpaint wiki no less), and we actually banned him (without knowing) because his server was making so many API requests to get the data! So even though we banned him at one point, we hired him. :)

Squidpunch has full access to everything... our database... our technology... our code... he will be cranking out enhancements just like Steve and I do, and posting in the dev blog when they become available. He will be involved in the strategic planning of the site... the podcasts, the code weekends, the code nights, and everything in between. He doesn't speak for us, but he speaks WITH us... We look forward to seeing him grow into his new role on our site. If you have a moment, stop by his blog and wish him well.

Welcome to the crew Squidpunch! We are happy to have you!
