Conversion complete

I just wanted to let everyone know that I think I found everywhere that Old Spice was mentioned and have completed removing it from the challenge feature. So if you are in a gamerscore challenge and you see "Old Spice" anywhere, feel free to shoot me an email.

Thanks to everyone who was sending in the support emails!

You will also notice the challenge badges are a shade of green now... mmmm xbox green... actually it is less xbox green than it is green bean green... I also replaced the ship with the letters "GC" for gamerscore challenge. I was working on an icon and man... I don't know but my icon making skills have been tehsuck(tm) lately. So letters it is. You can check out all the challenge badges on the scoring page.

Genre Updates

Got in a few genre badge updates tonight, we wanted to get a few key titles which have had a good number of folks playing them into the system.  Here goes all of these are additions:

Music - Guitar Hero Aerosmith
Racing - GRID
Puzzle - Tetris Evolution, Word Puzzle, and Buku Sudoku
FPS - Bad Company
Family - Kung Fu Panda

I left a few games out that had different titles in different regions (except Sudoku) until we can come up with a solution for these titles.

I bet you thought we weren't going to do one of these eh? Fooled ya!

If there was anything that you could call an E3 podcast for 360voice, this would be it... we start the show off normally, with a few more people... and then we end with our 2008 E3 predictions. Enjoy!

Show notes:

  1. Introductions - ChangeAgent, Fatty Chubs, Squidpunch, QforQ... the normal cast of characters, but it is growing!
  2. What are we playing? - Lots of non-Xbox stuff... the game industry is big! People like GRID though.
  3. What are we working on? - Microblog fixes... Damn hackerz... Old Spice is gone...
  4. Game data stats - Fatty Chubs geeks out.
  5. What is happening in the community - Props to 3VCEs, check out community showcase... and thanks for being awesome.
  6. E3 predictions! Get them while they are hot!
  7. Bacon is a vegetable.

I edited this show while I was on vacation so I cannot be held responsible for any craziness... I was low on sleep.

E3 Madness

Regardless of how scaled back E3 is these days, it is still a fun time for the industry and a fun time for gamers! We get a bunch of high profile press conferences... packed with announcements... preceded by speculation...

We have re-opened the E3 Forum... so go post about the news!

We will also be hosting a live chat during some of the E3 conferences... giving away some T-shirts (and the contest winner badge!)

I also replaced the live chat link to point to this IRC server (in the drop down site nav) since this is the room we will be using... and hanging out in from time to time.

GamerDNA bar at the top of the pages

You will now be seeing a top "GamerDNA" network bar at 360voice.com. I just put it up today, to describe our participation and shift towards a site that is powered by the underlying gamerDNA technology that Steve, myself and the whole team are building.

Just to reiterate... while GamerDNA.com is a community site that exists at a platform agnostic level, the real secret sauce is the deep data technology that we pioneered at 360voice and are now scaling out to multiple platforms, games, and communities. In order to create the ultimate gaming profile in the same effortless way that we do for Xbox gamers at 360voice, we have to generalize much of the back end technology... that has been a lot of the work that we have been doing lately, that and just getting the website in order so we can begin scaling out all the different sections.

The network bar might get some tweaks as I go, and I still have to go and add the new include to all the parts of the site... but I just wanted to warn everyone about what you were seeing.

End of the Old Spice Sponsorship

As many of you have already noticed, our sponsorship with Old Spice and the Experience Challenge ended on July 1, 2008. It was a pretty exciting ride... tons of work... tons of fun... tons of challenges...

Old Spice (Proctor & Gamble) was a great sponsor to have. They let us run with our creative vision of what things should be... we had lots of freedom to build a gamerscore challenge system that we would all enjoy using.... and many of you did enjoy it!

Why didn't they renew? In the end, they liked the program and liked working with us, but wanted to stick with some more traditional channels... we can't blame them... the economy is shaky... the fact that they went with a crazy-small community website to begin with always amazed us! It took some real forward thinking, and we are glad those people were involved.

In the end, missing the renewal isn't a bad thing... Steve and I are getting pulled in dozens of directions, and while it is sad to see that section of the site turn from Red to Green... we will always have fond memories for Old Spice and what they did for this site.

Top 20 Days Played for games

I made a small change this morning to the Top 20 Days Played on each game page... There are many cases where people are tied on those little leaderboards...  so to break the tie, I am sorting it by gamerscore descending. So if you and a bunch of people have the same number of days played, the rank is by who has the highest gamerscore.

So if you dropped some spots due to the tie breaker, go score some points!

Question: Does anyone use the Directory?

Here is a question for the community:

"Do you use the Directory?"

I am talking about the user directory that is up on the nav bar... the issue is that it is an HTML scraper's dream... those pages just get pounded day in and day out and I have to imagine people aren't really bringing up all the "S" tags just to find their friends... so my thought was to maybe turn that section off (remove it) if it isn't really being used. With the search box you can find any friends you have. I never personally use it... so I was just wondering... we built it because we had the tag search.

I am interested in feedback.

IP Banning today

It seems that the database/site issues are still in play today... it seems we are under some sort of attack both from an HTML scraping standpoint... and a SQL injection attack stand point... I am watching the logs and pretty much banning anything that looks fishy... by fishy I mean hundreds of simultaneous requests to non-API pages... and anything with funky querystrings.

If you get banned... and you are legit... email us at mail@360voice.com... but I doubt that is the case... so if the site seems wonky, this is probably why.

Update 2:11pm ET

Ok, so Steve found some fancy ISAPI filters that I added to the server to hopefully block all the madness... what effects they might have on other sections, I am not quite sure yet... so if you see something broken, let us know in the support forum.

New ads... on various pages.

Today I will be deploying some new ads to some of the pages. The most jarring will be a new 300x250 ad on the homepage and the blog page. I know that we all hate ads... but given that 360voice is now part of a for-profit start-up... we have to play our part to help out the mothership.

The exciting part, is that 360voice is actually quite effective with its advertising. Because our community is so vibrant, we actually make up a pretty good chuck of the ad money that is gathered... so you can all be proud to be apart of a significant cog in the wheel! :)

Seriously though... I am well aware of how advertising is perceived on the web... but you can take comfort in the fact that the advertising that will appear in these blocks will be as targeted as possible... we are working with a company called Intergi that fills all the ad inventory from GamerDNA... and they do a pretty good job... so while it all won't be gaming specific, it should be stuff generally targeted at gamers.

So I hope everyone doesn't revolt... remember that Steve and I are working on these sites full time now... and we have to feed our families... and while the ad money doesn't go to that directly, it does help us in our goal to build a viable company.

Database issues

Hey everyone... we were running a database query and it decided to take over THE ENTIRE SERVER.

It actually started melting the silicon on the board... things were moments from catching on fire.

(I might be over-dramatizing this)

Anyhow, we are working on resurrecting it from the dead. Stay tuned.

Update 9:53pm CT

Things have been pretty smooth after a database server reset... don't know what that was... but it was lame! Hopefully all good now. :)

A hodge podge of small changes

Many people have asked to have your stats to compare against the average stats that were added to the games page yesterday, that was simple enough so I squeezed it in this morning.  So you can now easily compare your scores and played days for a single game against the average value of the members here at 360voice.

Have you ever microblogged a game like LEGO® Indiana Jones™, just to find out your blog suffered its own version of the RRoD?  Well I believe I have just hit the encoding beast with the final blow, and you should be able to microblog a special character games without entering blog graveyard.(hopefully).  I understand that this is mostly a fix for us so we don't always fix blogs that go breaky - but it is also a fix for you!  You shouldnt have to avoid microblogging about your expierence just because the game has a funky title.  The encoding issue is dead - amen.......at least i hope so!

On those same lines, I noticed on the permalinks (or page that you leave comments) the special character games were not encoding correctly, it was mixed within the text of the blog so it wasn't as obvious at first, but while I was on my mission to destroy the encoding beast, I took care of this as well.

You know the drill, click the title if you want to leave a comment - and definately post if you see something wrong from the few small changes I just shoved onto the server.

Some Monday Love to the Games Page

Did you know the average achievements unlocked across all 360voice members who played Call of Duty 4 is 19?  Or that 97.31% of members who voted on GTA IV gave it a thumbs up?  Probably not, but now you can! These are just a few of the added features just put online on the games pages.  Head on over to the page for a specific game and you can see some interesting new features

On the top left you will see some new fun stats about the gamers here at 360voice.  In addition to the original stats we gave you, you can now see the average gamerscore and achievement gain for all 360voice members who have played the game.  You can see the average number of days dedicated to the game, and finally you can also how well the game is doing in the thumbs up, thumbs down rating system.

Speaking of game ratings, if you are logged in, and have played the game you are viewing you have all the options you have over on your games lists page - the ability to mark it as something you own, something you rented, something you traded, something you want to play, and of course the ability to give it a thumbs up or down.

But wait, the fun doesn't end there!  You can also scroll down to the bottom of the page and now in addition to the recent players list, you can also now see a list of people who have marked the game as something they own, or who have actually marked the game as something they want to play. So you are more likely to find a match when looking to join forces over xbox live.

As always click the title to leave a comment and let us know what you think about the new features.

Oops

So... Funny Story... I am sitting here with ChangeAgent and Squidpumch at 11:00PM EST....  Playing some GRID and we got an IM from FragmasterWolf asking if the blogs ran today.  A moment of nervous shock hit me, as I asked ChangeAgent where his computer was.  See, the 3 of us have been hanging out all day, rescuing Squidpunch from burning subway trains (no joke), eating grilled foods, playing Rock Band, and generally enjoying the down time and conversation.

So I wasn't thinking that yesterday I set the jobs to run manually to make sure nothing was missed with the outage.  However I never turned it back on, and no one was at the terminal pushing the buttons to make it run.  So the hamster fell off the wheel and no one was there to put it back on.

Sorry guys, catching things up, everyone will have blog entries, just no badge updates or leaderboards for today.

Jobs Delayed Today

The jobs are delayed today, due to a server maintenance issue.  Shouldn't be any data loss or miss blogs, but to be safe streaks are going to be disabled (for what you played or did not play Thursday 6/13/08), you still have to play today.

Will update when I know more, thanks for your patience.

Update 12:27PM PST - Blogs are currently running.  Things are a few hours behind today, so things like Badges will be very late this evening before updating.  Things look okay, so I hope everyone's entry is going to be pretty accurate.  In other news all 360voice folks (ChangeAgent, Fatty Chubs, and Squidpunch) are in the same town right now... trouble.

GTA IV falls to CoD4, and Arcade Action

For the first time since GTA IV has launched, CoD4 has surpassed it in total players yesterday. It lasted 44 Days which is a pretty good amount of time at the top, unless you are CoD4 which almost completely dominated the #1 spot for 170 days before losing it to GTA IV.  That's half of an entire year! Could it hold the spot again until November when another major FPS title is released?  A year or more of holding it down in the top 1 or 2, is an amazing feat in the console world where gamers quickly move onto the latest game.

In the arcade world neither new title sold well enough to break into the top 10 games (trials are not figured into this total).  WOTB: Commando 3 faired the best, taking the #1 spot for arcade games, beating out Uno, which is still going strong as the top played arcade game of all time, and still the top this month.  I am sure the promise of Street Fighter HD beta, helped convert a few sales.  Frogger 2 on the under hand, didn't break the top 10. But that didn't stop at least one arcade nut called Zebrasqual  from finishing off all the achievements in a day.

Member of the Moment: T360UK Smiley

So the "Wheel of Members" stopped with a grin this month.. Well, maybe not so much a grin as a T360UK Smiley! Rather than force you to read a bunch more of my oh-so clever one-liners, I will get to questioning the newest Member of the Moment!

What was the first game that you played and what drew you into gaming in general?
The first game I played must of been on my Dad’s BBC Acorn, it was something he had written himself where you attempt to move various animals from one side of the river to the other, but various animals can't be left together else they will eat each other. This must have been when I was about 4-5, so around 20 years ago! I think the fact that I could "do it" when other things such as spelling failed me so badly. Finding something I was good at gave me a push to want more.

All my Dad ever made was Barbeque.. How long have you been gaming?
My first console was the Master System. I remember it came with Alex the Kid (in Miracle Land) built-in. I got it for one of my birthdays; I estimate I was around 10 at the time. The mega drive had just been released and so the price of the Master System dropped so my parents could afford it.

So here is the real question, What brought you to 360voice?

When my flatmate at the time decided to buy a 360, I saw GeoWars and decided that if in anyway I could find the money to get my own, then it would happen. Randomly a few months later University decided to tell me that, in fact, I didn't need to pay my own fees and they were covered by part of a grant I had received. With this I knew I could get one, and started Googling for various 360 sites, this is how I found 360voice!

Thank Heavens for Google! Any 360voice memorable moments you want to share?
Being chosen for the "Red Rabbit" Beta of the challenges was awesome, I remember randomly finding the email from the site and thinking "Oh, they are launching a new idea", then I actually read it and it invited me to join the Beta! I was so excited. It kind of proved to me that I was an accepted member of the community, and that was really nice.

There was a Beta? Man, I never get in Betas.. Is there anything that you would like to see on 3v that isn't already here?
I really can't think of anything - what a rubbish answer, but 360voice does soooooooo well to already fill all of my requirements.

Here comes a tough question... Who would win in a fight, Fatty Chubs, ChangeAgent or Squidpunch?
Fatty Chubs, if the other two won, he would remove their badges and proclaim the contest never happened! - Badges prove the truth! ;). In reality, I hope we never find out, as they should never fight! They are maybe the greatest team I know and I'm glad to be able to say that I take part in what they have created.

Aren’t we all... When did you sign up for Live?
About 20 minutes after I got my 360 home. In fact, I had already created my "Live ID" many years before when the original Xbox's version of Live was new. This was due to working within a LAN Gaming Center and us doing various testing and events on behalf of Microsoft. I also helped with trials for the World Cyber Games and various other "Pro-Gaming" Events.

Simple enough, NEXT! What is your Game Setup?
I have a full Desktop PC running gentoo linux, and this provides sound mixing for my 360, allowing me to play my mp3s and mix the volume nicely with whatever game I'm playing - I also have a VGA Switchbox which lets me switch between having the 360 or my computer in control of the monitor. It’s a bit of a power user setup, but that’s what I am. :)

What other systems, if any, do you own?
I have a Wii, which gets some playtime when friends, etc. come around but it gets nowhere near as much attention as my 360! WiiFit is interesting, as it’s made me consider my health, which I believe is something all Gamers should do really.

Health conscious gaming... Beautiful. What's your favorite feature on Xbox LIVE?

I think I'll have to sadly say Achievements, however not for the fact you can wave them in other people’s faces. It’s the fact they have allowed games to be played to death and you actually getting some end result from it instead of thinking "oh, I've wasted 20 hours of my life" I can now say "I wasted 20 hours, but got 1000/1000!". Sounds weird, but to me, it’s worth it!

Your not the only one that feels that way. What new ones coming up are you looking forward to?
Gears of War 2, apart from this, not much really. I tend not to set my sights on any given game in case I can't afford them when they release or something else happens which ends up meaning I can't play. I also don’t play demos for this same reason. If it play it, I want it. If I want it, I buy it!

After that I can almost guess the answer to this one. Do you own or rent games for the most part?
Own, there is no way of easily renting in the UK which would fit how I play games. I try to get 110% out of a game and this means generally I can spend anything up to a few months playing a single game. As rental costs generally factor you having the game for a few weeks maximum, it just doesn't make sense for me to rent. Oh, and I get 25% discount on software because of my job. ;)

No Gamefly? I weep for you. Are there any Genres that you prefer over the others, or do you just like to game, no matter what type it is?
RPG's are my love. Nothing gets me hooked like a good RPG, it’s just a shame that they are so time consuming! Also I really enjoy playing FPS as I've played them pretty much all through my gaming life. Sticking with what I know seems best. ;)

With that said, Any must-have titles for 2008 or something that you have played already this year that you think will take the title of "Game of the Year" for you?
Grand Theft Auto IV is amazing at the moment, and GoW2 should hopefully take this title, but I'm sure there will be other games in the meantime which might even steal it off these two giants of gaming quality. At least, I HOPE someone can produce something to live up to the style and finesse that GTA has shown us. It would be a shame if no one can do better.

We can only hope. What is your most memorable moment on Xbox Live?
Once lagging while playing GoW on Gridlock. I managed to fire the Boomshot, run across the map, glancing sideways to see my own shot traveling along beside me. I ran into a group of Locust and then my shot hit me in the back. As you can't "self kill" it instead blew up killing the entire Locust Team, much to the shock of myself and my teammates!

Nice! What is the one Achievement you are most proud of?
I think 7-day Survivor on Dead Rising - This achievement needed about 4 attempts before I finally managed it, and anyone who tried for it knows that one little mistake can mean instant doom in that mode. Also the fact you can't save means you have to sit down and play for a LONG hard period of time seems to make it so much more worthwhile when it finally unlocks!

Is there anything else that you would like to add, or that you would like the Community to know about you?
I'm part of Team 360 UK, a wonderful group of guys who just like to have fun, we did play professionally for awhile, appearing on XLEAGUE TV and various websites, before deciding to just play for fun... and I once won a T-Shirt from HMV for playing "Rollcage" at a stupidly high speed ;)

And there it is!

Do you find yourself longing for the past? Remembering the members that already had their moments? Go discover the forgotten.

Weekly Recap Optimization

Every Monday your Xbox will blog a recap of the previous week's play.  Some of you might have noticed that these have been appearing very late Monday or even Tuesday morning.  There is a particular piece that has been causing us problems, and that's the new game recap.  If you have played new games that week, your Xbox will mention them. However this is just too intensive on our system.   So the bad news is we had to turn it off.

The good news is it will be back in about two weeks.  I think it's just too valuable/fun of a feature to do away with, so we are going to do a bit of database rework and make it work.  But because we have to make these changes, it's going to take a day or two to get the DB change in, and then we need a full week for it to populate the data.  As an additional benefit this is going to bubble up a new piece of data for us to play with, so I am guessing Squidpunch will find a cool place to use it on the games list.  Nothing major, but new data is always good.

Update: Recaps finished in record time today, and badges are done as well.  Going to be making a database change, so you might notice very sluggish blogs sometime between 6:30-7:30 EST.
